Cooktop and Rangehood Repairs in Cairns

Cooktops and rangehoods sit side by side and fail in related ways: a burner that clicks without lighting, an induction zone that will not recognise a pan, cracked ceramic glass, or an extractor fan that has gone silent while the kitchen fills with steam. This page explains the common faults for gas, ceramic and induction cooktops and for ducted and recirculating rangehoods, what repairs involve, the rules that apply in Queensland, and how to ask for a connection with an independent local repairer in Cairns.

To be clear about who does what: we run a referral service and do not carry out repairs. Your enquiry is forwarded to a local business that services cooktops and rangehoods. It will contact you, assess the appliance and quote for any work. Confirm the business's electrical or gas licence, insurance and warranty terms before you approve anything.

Gas cooktops

Gas hobs have burners, burner caps, an ignition system (spark electrodes and a spark generator), flame-failure devices on many models, and control valves. Common issues include:

  • Continuous clicking – moisture or spilled food on the ignition switch or electrode, or a faulty spark module.
  • Burner lights then goes out when the knob is released – usually the flame-failure thermocouple or its position in the flame.
  • Uneven, yellow or lifting flames – blocked burner ports, misaligned caps or a gas pressure problem.
  • Stiff or loose knobs – worn valves or spindles.

Cleaning burners and caps and letting them dry fully resolves some faults. Anything involving gas valves, connections, pressure or flame-failure devices is gas work. In Queensland, servicing and repairing a gas appliance requires a gas work licence issued by Resources Safety and Health Queensland, and installing or replacing a gas cooktop requires a full gas work licence.

Ceramic and solid-element cooktops

Ceramic (radiant) cooktops heat coils beneath a glass surface. Common faults are a single zone not heating (element, switch or energy regulator), a zone stuck on full power, and the residual-heat light staying on. Cracked or chipped glass is a safety issue: stop using the cooktop and switch it off at the circuit breaker, because liquid can reach live parts. Replacement glass is available for some models, often as a top assembly; for older models it may be discontinued.

Older solid-plate and coil cooktops typically need replacement plates, switches or terminal blocks.

Induction cooktops

Induction cooktops heat compatible cookware through magnetic fields generated by coils and power electronics. Faults typically show as error codes, zones that will not detect pans, fans running continuously, buzzing beyond the normal hum, or the unit tripping the power. Before booking, check that your cookware is induction-compatible (a magnet should stick firmly to the base) and that the cooling vents underneath are not blocked by drawers or stored items.

Repairs may involve power boards, interface boards, coils, cooling fans or sensors. Because induction units are usually hard-wired on a dedicated circuit, disconnecting and reconnecting them is electrical work, and installing a new circuit is a job for a licensed electrician.

Rangehoods

Rangehoods come as canopy, undermount, slide-out, island, integrated and down-venting models, and either duct air outside or recirculate it through charcoal filters. Typical repairs include:

  • fan motor not running, running slowly or only on one speed;
  • noisy operation from a worn motor bearing, loose impeller or obstruction in the ducting;
  • lights not working (globes, LED drivers or switches);
  • controls not responding;
  • grease dripping from the hood, often from saturated filters or condensation in ducting.

Clean metal grease filters regularly and replace charcoal filters as the manufacturer recommends. Saturated filters reduce extraction and raise fire risk.

Repair or replace?

Cooktops and rangehoods are fitted into benchtops and cabinetry, so a like-for-like replacement must match the existing cut-out and mounting. Repair is often attractive when parts are available, especially for premium or integrated units. Replacement may make more sense for an old cooktop with cracked glass that is no longer available, an induction unit with a failed main board out of warranty, or a cheap rangehood with a burnt-out motor.

As with any appliance, if the product failed earlier than you would reasonably expect, you may have rights under the Australian Consumer Law against the retailer or manufacturer.

Preparing for a visit

  • Find the model number: on cooktops it is commonly on a label underneath the unit or in the manual; on rangehoods it is usually inside behind the filters.
  • Clear the benchtop and the cupboard or drawer below the cooktop.
  • Remove and clean rangehood filters if it is safe to do so.
  • Know where the circuit breaker and, for gas, the isolation valve are.

Cairns conditions

Humid tropical air and cooking steam combine to create condensation in rangehood ducting and around cooktop controls. Moisture on gas ignition switches is a frequent cause of non-stop clicking, so letting the area dry after cleaning or a wet-season storm often helps. Salt air near the coast corrodes rangehood fixings, grease filters and switch contacts more quickly. Ducting runs through hot roof spaces in many Cairns homes; poorly sealed or uninsulated ducts can drip condensation back into the hood.

Apartments and holiday lets frequently use recirculating rangehoods because external ducting is impractical. Charcoal filters in these units are often overlooked, so check them before assuming the motor has failed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my gas cooktop keep clicking?

Continuous clicking usually means moisture or food residue has reached an ignition switch or electrode, or the spark module is faulty. Let the cooktop dry completely after cleaning. If clicking continues, have a licensed gas technician inspect it.

Can a cracked ceramic or induction cooktop glass be repaired?

Cracked glass cannot be safely patched. Switch the cooktop off at the circuit breaker and stop using it. For some models the glass top or top assembly can be replaced; for others the part is no longer available and the cooktop needs replacing.

Why is my induction cooktop not detecting the pan?

The most common reason is cookware that is not induction-compatible, or a pan that is too small for the zone. If compatible pans are not detected or an error code appears, a sensor, coil or power board may be faulty.

Why has my rangehood fan stopped working?

Check the power, lights and controls first. A fan that hums without turning may have a seized motor or a jammed impeller; one that does nothing may have a failed switch, capacitor, control board or motor. Saturated filters also reduce extraction noticeably.

Who can repair or replace a gas cooktop in Queensland?

Servicing and repairing a gas cooktop requires a gas work licence issued by Resources Safety and Health Queensland. Installing or replacing a gas cooktop, or altering the gas system, requires a full gas work licence. Ask the business which licence it holds.
